Special avalanche warning issued for central Rockies this weekend

Recent, heavy snowfall has created an extremely unstable snowpack across the Rockies

Avalanche Canada has issued a special avalanche warning for the central Rockies, encompassing Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Kananaskis Country, and Jasper National parks until the end of March 24.

Recent heavy snowfall has created an extremely unstable snowpack, overlying a weak layer that has already triggered numerous, large avalanches in the past two weeks, according to Avalanche Canada. These avalanches have been powerful and fatal, including two recent avalanches near Jasper last week.

While natural avalanche activity may be decreasing, the risk of human-triggered avalanches remains dangerously high. These slides can be triggered remotely, meaning even from a distance. Warming temperatures, sun exposure and incoming storms will further increase the likelihood of avalanches.

Up to 90 cm of recent storm snow blankets weak, faceted layers, with an additional 15 cm expected by the weekend. This added weight will further destabilize the snowpack.

Given the instability, backcountry users are warned to proceed with caution. Select only low-angle terrain, and steer clear of overhead hazards and terrain traps. All backcountry users are urged to become familiar on avalanche terrain, have proper safety equipment, and knowledge of companion rescue tactics.
