
Snowy weather cancels buses, schools open in Waterloo region
School buses are cancelled but schools are open in Waterloo region Friday after heavy snow fell on the area during the day Thursday and overnight.

More than 20 cm of snow fell in Waterloo region, leading to snow-covered roads. Waterloo region and northern Wellington County are under an orange snow squall alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The orange alert is part of a new colour-coded system. Orange means it's a more significant weather event. In the case of a snowstorm, orange will be issued when it is expected to take a few days to completely clear the snow.

Guelph and southern Wellington County are under a yellow snow squall alert. Yellow means the weather is likely to bring hazardous or dangerous conditions, affecting travel and causing delays or cancellations.

Students in Guelph and Wellington County have a PD day on Friday. The Upper Grand District School Board said schools and offices in North Wellington will be closed Friday. Anyone who had parent-teacher interviews scheduled for Friday will be contacted to make other arrangements.
The forecast says Waterloo region can expect another 20 to 30 cm of snow Friday and overnight into Saturday.
Wind will also be a factor again Friday, although gusts won't be as strong as Thursday and will be closer to 30 to 50 km/h. In more rural areas, this will blow the snow around which could lead to reduced visibility.
