Russian volcano erupts following powerful earthquake, aftershocks possible
No injuries have been reported.
The Shiveluch volcano, one of Russia's most active, has erupted and triggered a temporary "code red" warning for aircraft flying over the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
The eruption sent a plume of ash 5 km into the sky, and it stretched out over 490 kilometres east and southeast of the volcano, according to a video released by Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
On Sunday, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck nearby. The volcano started showing signs of an eruption shortly after.
Experts say another potentially stronger earthquake is possible within 24 hours.
There are no immediate reports of injuries resulting from the earthquake or the eruption.
