Rain, rain, go away: St. John’s records its all-time wettest November

Almost every day in November recorded measurable precipitation in St. John’s

If it’s going to stay this gloomy for this long, we might as well set a record while we’re at it.

The clock struck midnight on Sunday to close out the wettest November ever recorded in St. John’s, Newfoundland, with the city recording more than twice its normal monthly rainfall for this time of year.

A stubbornly wet pattern lurking over Atlantic Canada kept St. John’s locked in the gloom for much of November.

The city recorded measurable precipitation on 27 out of 30 days last month, with 11 separate days picking up double-digit rainfall totals.

The remaining three days recorded a trace of precipitation—enough rain to note that it rained, but not enough to actually measure in the rain gauge.

November’s total rainfall came in at a whopping 326.0 mm for the month. A typical November in St. John’s would see around 132 mm of rain.

Atlantic Canada monthly precipitation November 2024

While not quite as extreme, we saw wetter-than-normal conditions repeated throughout Atlantic Canada last month. Charlottetown and Moncton also saw above-normal rainfall. Not everybody got in on the wet weather, though—Halifax stands out for having seen just about half of its normal November precipitation.

This active pattern isn’t over just yet. Looking ahead, we’re likely going to see another significant system move into the Atlantic provinces by the end of this week. The exact storm track is still up in the air, but rain, snow, and a messy mix are all possible as this storm swings through the region.
