Earthquakes of this strength have the potential to cause serious damage

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake rocked the eastern region of Papua New Guinea with a depth of 127 kilometres.
The epicentre of the major earthquake is located approximately 66 kilometres southwest of the town Lae and there were no immediate reports of damage.
There are reportedly no tsunami warnings for Hawaii and Australia.
Earthquakes of a magnitude between 7 and 7.9 have the potential to cause serious damage, and it is estimated that only 20 earthquakes of this magnitude occur each year.
