Before and after shots show extent of Mozambique devastation
At least 600,000 people have been displaced in the wake of Cyclone Idai's devastating impact on southern Africa according to a report from the UN, and now rescue workers in affected parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi are struggling to stave off a growing 'secondary crisis' in the region.
Satellite images show some of the extent of the destruction in the city of Beira, which took a direct hit from Idai. The Red Cross has already reported cases of cholera in the city of more than 500,000 people, where food, clean water, and shelter are all in very short supply.

Floodwaters have been slow to drain from the relatively flat landscape, where bridges, roads, and homes have all been washed away. President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique estimated last week that 1,000 people in his country had been killed, according to The New York Times. The Times added that some emergency responders have said that the toll could rise as floodwaters drain away and reveal more bodies, though the actual number of dead may never be known.
