Magnitude 3.6 earthquake hits upstate New York, felt in Ontario
The earthquake, a preliminary magnitude 3.6, struck near the eastern tip of Lake Ontario on Sunday afternoon.
A minor earthquake that rattled northern New York early Sunday afternoon prompted reports of shaking in portions of eastern Ontario.
Initial reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the quake struck northern New York at 2:10 p.m. EDT with a preliminary magnitude of 3.6.
The relatively shallow earthquake occurred a few kilometres southwest of Watertown, New York, near the eastern tip of Lake Ontario.
Based on the region's geography and the characteristics of the quake, the USGS estimated that minor shaking would be felt across parts of eastern Ontario, with the Kingston area most likely able to experience the rattle.
Multiple folks on Twitter reported feeling the small jolt as far north as Ottawa.
There were no initial reports of damage on either side of the border.
