Several tropical systems will likely intensify in the Atlantic basin
There are a few tropical systems churning around the world. Genevieve is weakening and currently a Category 1 hurricane.
Genevieve is churning in the eastern Pacific Basin as a Category 1 hurricane, as of Wednesday afternoon. A hurricane warning is in effect for Southern Baja California peninsula from Los Barriles to Todos Santos and Genevieve's maximum sustained winds are at 150 km/h.
Genevieve is expected to remain a hurricane while it passes just west of the southern Baja California peninsula and it will gradually weaken through Thursday and Friday.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the west coast of the Baja California peninsula from north of Todos Santos to Cabo San Lazaro. A tropical storm watch is in effect for the east coast of the Baja California peninsula from Los Barriles to La Paz.
Genevieve is expected to produce 75 to 150 mm of rain with isolated totals of 250 mm across portions of far southern Baja California Sur. This rainfall may lead to life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
DEVELOPING SYSTEMS IN THE ATLANTIC
There are several areas in the Atlantic basin where tropical storm development could occur in the next five days.
An elongated area of low pressure, located roughly 1,600 kilometres east of the Windward Islands, continues to produce a concentrated area of showers and thunderstorms mainly on the west side of the disturbance. This has a 90 per cent chance of tropical development within the next 48 hours.
A tropical wave located over the central Caribbean Sea is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible over next day or so while it moves westward at about approximately 30 km/h. The wave is forecast to move more slowly west-northwestward and a there is an 80 per cent that it will become a tropical depression in the next five days.
As well, a new wave sitting off the west coast of Africa has been given a 30 per cent chance of development in the next five days.
