Canadian tourist dies in unexpected snowstorm in Italy's Dolomites
Officials say the storm delayed rescue efforts.
A 56-year-old Canadian woman is dead following a fast-forming snowstorm in Italy's Dolomite mountains, the Associated Press reports.
A Friday statement by Italy's Alpine and Rescue Corps says her companion, a 56-year-old man, has received treatment for severe hypothermia.
The names and hometowns of the hikers have not been released.
The climbers called for help Thursday evening after becoming stranded in a snowstorm about two kilometres from a mountain refuge. A rescue team made contact with the hikers, but the weather prevented a helicopter evacuation of the female hiker, who later died on the mountain.
Rescuers put up a tent to shelter the male hiker overnight. He was evacuated by helicopter early Friday morning when the storm cleared and taken to a nearby hospital.
