500+ mm: Edmonton enduring its wettest summer on record

Edmonton is enduring an exceptionally wet summer as the region experiences persistent rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The city has seen more than a year’s worth of precipitation just since the beginning of June.

Rainiest summer on record in Edmonton, with weeks to go

July is the wettest month of the year in Edmonton, with the weather station in the city proper averaging about 78 mm of rainfall during an average month. The city averages around 423 mm of precipitation during an entire year.

The rain gauge in the City of Edmonton picked up a historic 511 mm of rain between June 1 and July 26 alone.

Such a remarkable total far exceeds the previous wettest summer on record, when 417 mm fell there in the summer of 1953. Climatological summer continues through Aug. 31, so we’re guaranteed to pad this record-shattering total in the weeks ahead.

Equally impressive is that the city has seen 30+ mm of rain on seven separate days since the beginning of the summer season.

Edmonton’s total eclipses most other cities

How does this astounding total stack up against other major cities?

Just down the road, Calgary has picked up 121 mm of rain since June 1, which is slightly behind the airport’s June-July average of about 178 mm.

Edmonton has seen 400+ per cent more rainfall than Calgary this summer, which is both a testament to the conditions experienced there this year, as well as the fickle nature of summertime downpours.

Looking farther east across Canada, the gauge at Toronto-Pearson Airport has only seen 139 mm this summer, while Halifax’s seasonal rainfall stands at just 140 mm.

Edmonton’s accumulation of 511 mm through July 26 has even managed to out-rain some infamously soggy cities on the Gulf Coast, with summer-to-date totals of 455 mm in New Orleans, 278 mm in Houston, and 248 mm so far in Tampa.
