Simple steps you can take to prepare for a winter storm

Plan ahead for the upcoming snow.

An active winter weather pattern is in the forecast.

With that in mind, here are three things you should know before the storm strikes.

  1. Clear snow off your driveway, sidewalks and vehicle as soon as you can. Otherwise, the cold air is going to harden the snow, which could turn into an icy mess.

  2. Avoid a slip or a slide by using salt, sand, or even kitty litter. Keep in mind salt helps to melt ice and snow most efficiently when the temperature is above -10 degrees Celsius. Try using alternatives like sand, grit, and kitty litter to add traction when the temperature is below -7 degrees Celsius.

  3. If you can, avoid unnecessary travel. If you must head out make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of any snow to allow for proper ventilation, otherwise, carbon monoxide becomes a danger.

Always remember to drive carefully and keep a safe distance between cars during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.
