Four alarming things that could be lurking in your leaf piles
Fall is here — and that means piles of leaves are now lining your lawns and streets.
For some people, that may bring visions of yardwork.
For others, it looks like an opportunity to have some fun.
But the next time you're about to dive into a pile of leaves, there are some things to consider.
1. FUNGUS
Mould doesn't just grow on shower curtains. It can also grow on fallen leaves, grass and compost piles.
2. TINY CREATURES ...
All types of wildlife -- including spiders, snakes, beetles, caterpillars, and even frogs -- will sometimes shelter in fallen leaves. Some creatures will bite when startled.
3. SPEAKING OF TINY CREATURES ...
Ticks are another possibility, including ticks that can cause Lyme disease.
They will sometimes live in grass but can easily get swept up in a pile.
If you, your child, or your pet is rolling around in the leaves, it's best to perform a quick tick check once you head indoors.
4. SHARP OBJECTS
Do your best to ensure there are no sticks, rocks, garden tools are in a leaf pile that people or pets intend to play in.
