Winter storm blasts parts of Atlantic Canada with heavy snow ahead of deep chill

Several schools are closed in parts of Atlantic Canada as a powerful winter storm hits the region. Temperatures plunge with Arctic outbreak up next

A significant winter storm is underway for Atlantic Canada, and will continue to impact the region through Monday.

Hefty amounts of snow, blustery wind gusts, and soaking rains are likely across the Maritimes and parts of Newfoundland, with the deteriorating conditions prompting several school closures early Monday.

The heaviest swath of snow is forecast for much of central and northern New Brunswick, with as much as 30 cm possible in the hardest-hit areas.

Closures rack up with poor travel conditions Monday

A large winter storm will bring a swath of heavy snow from much of central and northern New Brunswick, including Fredericton, as well as the Gaspe Peninsula. Amounts here could reach 15-30 cm.

Prince Edward Island is set to fall right on the line between rain and snow. Folks on western P.E.I. are in line to see hefty snow totals from this system, while the eastern half of the island may see just a dusting.

Milder temperatures clashing with the cold air will lead to a sharp cutoff in snowfall totals near the Bay of Fundy. However, converging winds near the Bay of Fundy could increase snowfall accumulations along the shorelines of Nova Scotia.

Wind gusts of 50+ km/h across the Maritimes could lead to reduced visibility during periods of moderate to heavy snowfall.

"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve," said Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in a winter storm warning issued Monday morning.

Rain is forecast across Newfoundland, with the heaviest totals along the south coast ranging from 50-75 mm. Southwest winds will also be strong, with gusts up to 80 km/h, and as high as 100 km/h along parts of the coast.

A significant cooldown will follow this system as we begin to feel the influence of the polar vortex across the region.
