Warm fall left 'snow' room for winter's edge in Canada's capital

For the first time ever, Ottawa recorded zero centimetres of snow this fall season!

The final month of 2024 is finally upon us, and as of Dec. 1, it is now meteorological winter!

After a fall season of prolonged summer heat and record-breaking temperatures, many Canadians may have been eagerly waiting for the first flaky signs of winter.

For folks in Canada's capital city, Ottawa, those signs took longer than ever to appear.

Meteorological fall runs from September through November, and in that time, Ottawa's airport recorded a total of zero centimetres of snow.

The Ottawa International Airport has been recording meteorological data since 1938. In all of those years, 2024 is the first year that no snow accumulation has been recorded in any of the fall months.

A light dusting of snow was seen over the city at the end of November, but with no actual accumulation, it was recorded as zero centimetres.

That being said, it didn't take long for snow to fall as soon as the season came to a close. On Dec. 1, Ottawa recorded its first bout of accumulating snow, receiving 2.2 cm.

Now, forecasters are looking at the city's first snow event of the season this week as a clipper moves into the province. 10-15 cm of snow is on the line for the Ottawa region, which means folks will need to break out the shovels and snow blowers.

With any snowfall event, traffic in and around the city will likely be impacted by delays as drivers navigate the changing conditions.
