A gorgeous Friday across Alberta will see temperatures pushing the 20-degree mark in spots. That’ll change in a hurry as a cold front sends readings tumbling—along with the risk for snow throughout southern Alberta.

Friday warmth falls to weekend snow
A spring-like start to the long weekend on the western Prairies will see temperatures climb into the upper teens with abundant sunshine. Grande Prairie could even make a run for 20°C on Friday afternoon.

That’s going to change in a hurry by Saturday.
A passing cold front will send temperatures falling in a hurry. We’ll see rain build across the QE2 with snow showers in the higher terrain of the foothills.
Moisture will cross over the Rockies overnight Saturday, bringing snowfall across southern Alberta beginning in the pre-dawn hours on Sunday. The snow will continue throughout the day.

Expect the heaviest snowfall totals around the southern foothills south toward the international border. Some areas could see as much as 25 cm of accumulation.
Springtime snow is no surprise on the Prairies. Calgary has seen 10 cm of snow so far this month, which is about half of the 21 cm we’d expect to see fall in the city during a typical April.
