Stormy Sunday evening in southern Alberta comes with large hail threat
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the foothills in southern Alberta, including Calgary.
The weekend in southern Alberta may end on a thundery note for many as a weak surface trough and descending cold front trigger thunderstorm development through the afternoon and evening.
Thunderstorms are forecast to initiate off the foothills Sunday afternoon and track east-southeast through the evening. Parts of Highway 11 could see some of the stronger storms develop, impacting any travellers heading home after the weekend.

The storms will likely be fairly isolated, so not everyone within the severe thunderstorm watch area will see any storms, but those who do could be in for a strong storm.
Among those who are more likely to see some stormy weather are folks in Calgary.
Large hail is possible with any severe storms that do develop, which could damage property and crops.
Strong winds may also knock down weak trees and cause localized power outages. Some of the storms could also produce heavy rainfall, raising the risk for localized flooding.
Wildfire smoke could be a limiting factor for storm development and severity through the afternoon and evening, though, as it essentially acts as a cap over the unstable atmosphere.
