Chilly air, winds and snow to start the new week

A low tracking toward the Great Lakes will make for a messy Monday morning commute across southern Ontario—but two regions in particular are on track to see the heaviest snowfall.

Ontario precipitation forecast Sunday overnight

Folks around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can expect a period of wet snow to develop late Sunday evening around midnight. However, a period of ice pellets and freezing rain could mix in with warmer air aloft.

A few centimetres of snow could fall around the GTA where temperatures will hover near the freezing mark. Folks away from Lake Ontario and at higher terrain could see up to 5 cm of snow from this event.

Generally, totals of 3-5 cm are on tap for most areas in eastern Ontario through Monday, though locally higher amounts of up to 10 cm are possible.

Temperatures will jump above freezing on Monday, so the snow that falls will struggle to stick around. It will melt with milder air being drawn up, before temperatures fall back to freezing Monday night.

Ontario snowfall accumulation through Tuesday

Cottage country and northeastern Ontario are the places to be if you’re rooting for winter to hold its ground against spring’s slow but steady advance.

Moderate snowfall will develop in the aforementioned regions through the pre-dawn hours Monday, with periods of heavy snow lingering around Georgian Bay on Monday morning as the low-pressure system lifts northward.

Accumulations here will come in around 5-10 cm for most areas, with locally higher amounts possible under the heaviest snowfall.

Southern Ontario snowfall accumulation crop through Tuesday

Folks around the lakes can expect blustery conditions into the beginning of the week. Southerly wind gusts up to 70 km/h will develop along the Huron and Georgian Bay shores on Sunday night. Blustery southwesterly winds will develop across southern Ontario through Monday, bringing 60-70 km/h gusts to the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Following the system's departure, wraparound snow is forecast to continue Monday evening in the snowbelt regions, but will be fairly disorganized in nature.

Chilly to end March

Looking ahead, there isn't much good news for warm-weather lovers in the forecast through the end of the month.

Below-seasonal temperatures are expected to hold tight across southern Ontario heading into the final full week of March, potentially lingering into the opening days of April.

Forecasters will closely watch the track of any low-pressure systems, as their associated warm fronts could drag temporary bursts of warm air north of the border.
