Freezing rain is impacting areas from Georgian Bay to the Ottawa Valley, prompting significant travel disruptions and school closures across eastern Ontario and western Quebec.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued freezing rain warnings, including for Ottawa, with up to 24 hours of freezing rain possible in some areas. Ice accretion of 10-20 mm is expected, with localized amounts exceeding 20 mm in eastern Ontario.
Ice storm grips eastern Ontario Wednesday: Travel disruptions, power outages likely
Freezing rain began early Wednesday, persisting through the day across eastern Ontario. After a brief reprieve in precipitation, a second round of heavier freezing rain will develop Wednesday evening, lasting into the overnight period.
Southeastern Lake Superior and nearby areas, including Timmins and Sudbury, will see 10-25 cm of snow, while regions east of Georgian Bay could experience 5-15 mm of freezing rain.
Freezing rain won’t fully accumulate on all surfaces, as ice accretion depends on factors like wind, precipitation intensity, and surface conditions.
Blustery winds from the northwest may develop with the departing system, potentially worsening conditions.
Blowing snow, and reduced visibility are likely where the freshly fallen snow has hit.
Expect power outages, fallen branches, slippery roads, and flight cancellations. Colder air arriving Thursday may delay cleanup and power restoration efforts.
Another storm will arrive Friday as a potent clipper moves across the Great Lakes. Between 5-15 cm of snow and strong winds are forecast, potentially complicating recovery efforts.
