Newfoundland: Snowy system could bring up to 20 cm by Christmas

Some parts of Newfoundland could see nearly 20 cm of snow by Christmas morning.

The week will start off with fairly calm conditions across Atlantic Canada, but a snowy system looms for Newfoundland, which is likely the only province in eastern Canada that will wake up to falling snow on Christmas. A low pressure system is set to bring up to 20 cm of snow to the island by Wednesday and powerful wind gusts are expected to follow. Details and timing, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • New system brings heavy snow to much of Newfoundland and Cape Breton Tuesday night into Christmas morning

RISK OF HEAVY SNOW ON TUESDAY

The first system that brought snow to parts of Atlantic Canada this weekend will move out of the region through the early hours of Monday and will only bring small amounts of snowfall to southwestern Newfoundland.

After this system has moved eastward out of the region a new low pressure system will track in on Monday evening and is threatening heavy snow across Newfoundland. The heaviest snow will be on Tuesday morning across the entire island and will then taper off through the evening.

WATCH BELOW: TIMING OF SNOW

Up to 15 cm of snow are expected for western regions of the island and up to 20 cm for the Avalon Peninsula, but not everyone will still see the snow continuing into Christmas Morning.

STRONG WINDS WILL FOLLOW SNOW ON WEDNESDAY

Powerful winds that could gust over 80 km/h will follow on Wednesday, which increases the chance for sea-effect snow during the morning hours with bands coming in from the north, which could bring snow to places like Gander and St. Johns.

The sea-effect snow could last into the early part of the day. The strongest winds will be during the day on Christmas but will remain gusting upwards of 80 km/h through Boxing Day.
