Heavy rain, ice threat build to start the week in Atlantic Canada

Beware the risk for heavy rain and widespread icing to begin the new workweek across much of Atlantic Canada

A relatively quiet stretch of weather across Atlantic Canada fell on Sunday as some active conditions pushed into the region.

We’re tracking two distinct areas for potential disruptions. Ice is possible across parts of Newfoundland and Labrador overnight Sunday into Monday. Heavy rain and a wintry mix will push into the Maritimes on Monday and last into Tuesday.

This is the same system that brought widespread severe weather south of the border, and even triggered some rumbles of thunder over in Ontario.

While we don’t expect any severe weather in Atlantic Canada, the northern branch of that storm will glide into the region with some rain and wintry weather.

First comes the freezing rain threat across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Newfoundland precipitation Sunday evening

We’ll see freezing rain spread over central Newfoundland by Sunday evening, eventually reaching the island’s eastern coast by early Monday morning.

Some areas could see up to 5 mm of ice accretion before temperatures warm above the freezing mark on Monday.

Heavy rain, ice threat in the Maritimes

At the same time, rain will begin in New Brunswick on Monday morning before spreading into Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island by the afternoon hours.

MUST SEE: Freezing rain and ice pellets are dangerous winter hazards

Widespread rainfall totals of 30-50 mm are in the forecast through central New Brunswick, with totals of 50-75 mm possible down the road toward Saint John. The heavy rainfall could lead to a localized flood risk for some communities.

It's worth noting that the southerly flow pushing into the region could help western Nova Scotia's temperatures soar into the upper teens and close in on the 20-degree mark on Monday.

That warmth won't last for long. Cold air surging south will force a wintry mix to develop across northern New Brunswick.
