Severe thunderstorm risk shifts into Alberta this week

Large hail, high winds, and heavy rain are expected with thunderstorms on Wednesday

An approaching low-pressure system will bring active weather to parts of northern B.C. and Alberta on Wednesday, with severe thunderstorms developing in some areas.

Winds will strengthen across northeast B.C. and northwest Alberta, with gusts reaching 60 km/h in the afternoon.

Wednesday: Severe thunderstorm risk stretches across Alberta

Storms are expected to develop across central and northern Alberta, including Edmonton, Slave Lake, Cold Lake, Fort McMurray, and up to Hay River, N.W.T., during the late afternoon and evening. The leading triggers will be the system's low and an amplified trough.

Severe weather risks include heavy rain, large hail, and potentially damaging wind gusts topping 100 km/h, especially if storms form into a linear mode.

Areas along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border also face a risk of severe storms, with hail being the primary threat.
