Schools closed for the day as eastern Newfoundland digs out from snowfall

The snowy pattern continues for Newfoundland, with another system spreading heavy snow across parts of the island and forcing school closures early Monday

Schools from the Avalon Peninsula to Clarenville will remain closed throughout Monday as the region digs out from an overnight snowfall.

About 12 centimetres of snow fell in St. John's overnight, according to Environment Canada, with a further 2-4 centimetres expected throughout the morning. Winds gusting to 60 km/hr created drifting and poor visibility in some areas.

A winter storm warning remains in effect.

Metrobus and GoBus services will resume its services at 1:30 p.m. N.T. after delays on Monday morning.

Canada Post said it is pausing mail deliveries on the Avalon Peninsula due to the storm.

Newfoundland snowfall through Monday

The departures board at St. John's International Airport is also showing a long list of delayed or cancelled flights.

The snow also brought the justice system to a halt, as all four courts in St. John's closed for day.

Memorial University's St. John's campuses will also remain closed for the day.
