Storms in Ontario subside, but a looming Texas low will bring more rain

After a stormy Tuesday, forecasters are already looking ahead to Ontario's next rainmaker –– a moisture-boosted Texas low set to arrive on Thursday with plenty of precipitation

The stage was set for severe thunderstorms to come to fruition in southern Ontario on Tuesday, and they did, prompting watches and warnings.

The storms fired up near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in the afternoon and continued in the evening, with a few of them reaching severe warning criteria. Strong winds and nickel- to toonie-sized hail were reported in a few areas, including Listowel, near Arthur and in Walton.

The stormy weather began to subside Tuesday night, but that won't be the end of the rain. Forecasters have their eyes on the next system for southern Ontario, expected to arrive Thursday. A moisture-laden Texas low is anticipated to bring soaking rains to the region, lingering through Friday.

Days of rain to end the work week

A Texas low is brewing in the Deep South and will make its way up to southern Ontario by Thursday morning, bringing soaking rains to the province through Friday.

This low-pressure system will scoop up a stream of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in a prolonged period of rain.

There is a chance for embedded thunderstorms, which could enhance rainfall intensity, bringing the risk for localized flooding to some of the hardest-hit areas.

Although the rain will begin to ease Friday overnight, showers may linger across parts of the GTA, with light rain into eastern Ontario through Saturday afternoon.

Across much of southern Ontario, between 30-50 mm of rain is expected, while northeastern Ontario can expect 50-75 mm of rain through the duration of this week.

In true Ontario spring fashion, as the system departs Saturday, a changeover to wet snow is likely over northeastern sections, and even across the higher elevations of southern Ontario.
