Heavy rain to continue in Quebec, Atlantic provinces into Saturday

Rain will continue falling across parts of Eastern Canada that certainly don’t need any more precipitation this summer

Heavy rain will continue into the weekend for portions of Quebec and the Maritimes that have been soaked by seemingly endless rains for much of this summer.

The rain will persist through Friday night as the system responsible for this latest bout of liquid sunshine slowly makes its way east. We’ll see a renewed threat for thunderstorms on Saturday for some areas, while the bulk of the steady rain pushes into Newfoundland.

Areas: Southern Quebec to the Maritimes

Timing: Overnight into Saturday morning

Weather: A low-pressure system moseying through Quebec is responsible for this latest round of rain, as a front stretching south through southern Quebec and the Maritimes wrings out plenty of tropical moisture flowing over the region from the south.

Communities near the centre of the low in central Quebec will see the heaviest rainfall totals, with 50-75 mm expected through Saturday near Saguenay. Over in the Maritimes, we’re likely to see widespread totals of 20-30 mm through the beginning of the weekend, with higher accumulations possible around Halifax.

Locally higher rainfall totals are possible across any areas that see thunderstorms.

Saturday

Location: Southern Quebec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland

Timing: Throughout the day Saturday

Weather: Showers and the risk of thunderstorms will continue across southern Quebec into northern New Brunswick. The rest of the Maritimes should get a break from the rain as the bulk of the moisture pushes into Newfoundland.

The heaviest of the rainfall in Newfoundland will fall along the Fundy shores, where a risk for thunderstorms could increase rainfall totals.

Prepare

Make sure to keep up-to-date on your local forecast information and alerts. If you are outdoors in an area with a severe weather threat, make sure you have a safety plan in place in case you need to get to shelter.

Use extreme caution in areas that may experience localized flooding during and after heavy rains. Never try to drive across a flooded roadway. It’s impossible to tell how deep the water is until it’s too late, and the road may have been washed out beneath the water. It only takes a small amount of water for a vehicle to lose traction and begin floating, endangering both the lives of the occupants and their rescuers.

Be sure to check back for the latest on conditions across Eastern Canada.
