25-35 cm of snow threatens Quebec, blizzard conditions possible

Another 15-30+ cm of snow could fall on Sunday across parts of Quebec hit by a major winter storm just a few days ago

Winter storm watches and special weather statements are in place for much of southern and eastern Quebec ahead of a major winter storm threatening to sweep the province later this weekend.

Similar to the last event that just brought some significant snow totals through Thursday, there is still some initial uncertainty in the track of this new storm, and where the heaviest swath of snow falls. Many communities are at risk for 25-35 cm to fall by Monday.

Quickly accumulating snow could make for difficult travel.

As always, have a plan in place, and be sure to keep up-to-date on your local weather alerts. Always check the highway conditions before heading out.

Quebec spared from the initial pre-system snow Saturday

A strong ridge of high pressure will act as a shield to keep much of the pre-system snow out of Quebec and focused over southern Ontario to start.

We’ll likely see some snow creep into western parts of the province at times, as well as into the Montreal area, but accumulations and snow rates will be light.

The calm before the storm on Saturday will be a good time for residents to prepare for the next incoming round of heavy snow.

Heavy snow picks up in intensity Sunday

A low-pressure system will develop south of the Great Lakes on Saturday, pushing a swath of widespread heavy snow across the St. Lawrence, Eastern Townships, and central regions of the province on Sunday.

Montreal storm timeline

Parts of the Eastern Townships could see snowfall rates of 2-4 cm/hr into Sunday evening.

The majority of the snow will end overnight Sunday, with some flurries continuing into Monday. Conditions will remain blustery behind the system.

High uncertainty still exists around the precise track of this system. It’s possible that some ice pellets or freezing rain could mix in for extreme southern regions of Quebec, which could limit overall snowfall totals.

snowfall accumulation

The exact track of the low will determine where the heaviest snow totals will accumulate. Gatineau is on track for 20-25 cm of snow, while Montreal and the Eastern Townships could see 25-35 cm of fresh snow on the ground by Monday.
