Soaking rains, gusty winds in B.C. raise flood, power outage threats

Heavy rain, high-elevation snow, and gusty winds will make for a raw Sunday across B.C.

A strong, onshore flow will direct another system across the South Coast on Easter Sunday. If you have any outdoor plans, bring an umbrella and prepare for slippery road conditions.

Windy conditions up to 80 km/h may lead to ferry delays and a risk for power outages, while heavy rain will continue the potential for localized flooding across Vancouver Island and the South Coast.

With the arrival of the secondary system Sunday morning, rainfall will be heavy outside of the traditional rain shadows, with precipitation then subsiding by the overnight period.

The bouts of rain will add to what we’ve already seen since Thursday. Squamish has recorded over 50 mm of rainfall with an additional 50 mm possible throughout Sunday.

Wind gusts will exceed 70 km/h in along exposed coastal sections as the front pushes through on Sunday. Power outages and ferry delays are quite likely, so be sure to plan ahead and adjust plans accordingly.

Widespread high streamflow advisories remain in effect across Vancouver Island and the South Coast amid the heavy rainfall and potential for rapid snowmelt.

“Current forecasts are indicating the potential for localized flooding in low-lying areas,” the B.C. River Forecast Centre said in its advisory for the Lower Fraser Valley.
