Polar vortex to plunge town’s wind chills to -50 for several days

It’ll be a memorable cold outbreak as gusty winds make the frigid air dangerously cold in many locations in the coming days

The polar vortex will engulf much of North America as we head into next week, with temperatures dipping down into the -20s and -30s in some Canadian provinces.

Even states like the Carolinas, Georgia, and as far as Florida will see temperatures drop below the freezing mark due to the polar vortex making an appearance down south.

Polar Vortex Impacts Canada

Strong wind gusts will make it feel much colder than it actually is, and many provinces will experience frigid wind chills daily while this polar air continues to expand south and east.

Wind chill refers to how cold the air feels on your skin when temperatures are combined with the effect of wind blowing on the exposed areas.

Even though southern major cities will see frigid temperatures with cold wind chills, towns across northern Manitoba, extreme northern Ontario, and northern Quebec will experience wind chills in the -30s, -40s, and even -50s for a few short hours.

We have to travel to the Kivalliq region of Nunavut to find wind chills in the -50s that last for more than 24 hours!

Rankin Inlet’s forecast temperatures through Friday overnight into Monday evening range from the mid -20s to the mid -30s. Here’s the kicker: winds will gust anywhere from 40-50 km/h from the north. Now, combined with the air temperatures and the wind gusts, the estimated wind chill will make it feel like -50.

Arviat will also see wind chills in the -50s from Friday overnight through Sunday morning before winds become calmer Sunday afternoon.

Many regions of Western Canada will see temperatures deep into the -20s with wind chills feeling like the -30s and -40s.

Southern British Columbia will be the only region that will see temperatures above the freezing mark late this weekend into early next week due to Pacific flow.

Temperature Wind Chill Eastern Canada Monday

Central Canada is on track for colder temperatures to arrive by Monday, with wind chills in the -20s and -30s.

Atlantic Canada will have to wait until late Monday into Tuesday to see some of the coldest temperatures in a few years.
