Over 45 semi-trucks toppled by dangerous windstorm in Utah

Officials were forced to restrict travel on the interstates after several semi-trucks tipped over during the extreme wind event.

Over 45 semi-trucks were knocked over by powerful wind gusts in northern Utah on Tuesday. At least one person was killed and more than four drivers were injured.

A video of a truck succumbing to the powerful winds was captured by Lt Nick Street, a Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) trooper. During an interview with Storyful, Street said that the driver of at least one semi-truck that tipped over ignored the restriction for high-profile vehicles.

In addition to severe property damage, thousands of trees were knocked down, which temporarily left 170,000 homes and businesses without power. Winds reached 160 km/h and Gary Herbert, Governor of Utah, declared a state of emergency in light of the extensive damage.

Officials are calling this a “historic windstorm” and are still in the process of assessing how much the damages will cost, as reported by The Salt Lake Tribune.
