Next potent system takes aim at East Coast with remnant typhoon energy
Another moisture-packed system takes aim at Atlantic Canada this weekend, but this time with remnant energy from a Pacific typhoon
After what seemed like days on end of dreary weather conditions across the East Coast, the region was finally able to dry out, even with periods of sunshine splashing through parts of this week.
The dry-weather reprieve will be extremely short-lived, however, as yet another large and slow-moving system from the northeastern U.S. will make its way to Atlantic Canada this weekend. What's most interesting about this particular set-up is that some of the remnant energy from Typhoon Bolaven, which has traversed the Pacific and across Canada and the U.S, will help to develop this system.

While there is still some uncertainty with where the heaviest rain will fall, a widespread 20-40 mm is likely, with locally higher amounts possibly reaching 70 mm for parts of Newfoundland. The combination of rain-soaked soils and high winds with this system could lead to the risk for localized power outages.
DON'T MISS: A ‘historically strong’ El Niño is possible heading into winter
Saturday - Sunday
As the system tracks up the coast of the U.S., it will bring its first rain bands into the Maritimes Saturday morning and afternoon. This batch of precipitation will then move into Newfoundland, with persistent rain expected from the late morning into the evening.

There will be a brief break before the second round of rain moves in. This part of the system however, has lower forecast confidence. Exactly how the system develops will dictate where it tracks. That being said, confidence is growing that it will bring rain to the southern Maritimes once again Saturday night through Sunday.
Newfoundland will continue to see rain with this second round as well.

Most of the rain will be done by Monday morning, but there could still be a few lingering scattered showers.

There is some uncertainty as to where the heaviest rain will be, but a widespread 15-40 mm is expected for the Maritimes, with some areas seeing heavier amounts upwards to 50 mm in Nova Scotia. Newfoundland will see some of the heaviest rainfall, with 30-50 mm widespread, and some southern and central regions possibly reaching upwards to 70 mm.

Along with the rain, gusty winds will accompany this weekend system.
Widespread gusts of 40-60 km/h are likely across Atlantic Canada, but Sunday there is the chance for stronger gusts over Cape Breton and eastern Newfoundland with 70-90 km/h possible.
