With spring flowers in full bloom, B.C. is sending Canada a "virtual bouquet"
Greater Victoria's annual Flower Count aims to cheer up people in Canada who've yet to see enduring spring warmth.
Greater Victoria normally sees its first spring flowers weeks before the rest of the country – something they sometimes like to gently brag about.
For 45 years, Greater Victoria businesses have sponsored the annual "flower count," counting up all the blooms that have sprouted so far, from snowdrops to the famous cherry blossoms.
The count is, as always, in the millions, but the circumstances are different – Canada remains in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, this year, the Flower Count is being shared as a "virtual bouquet," not unlike sending flowers to a friend or loved one who's feeling under the weather.
"All Canadians are feeling anxious right now. We can almost see the end of the pandemic but we’re not quite there yet," Bruce Williams, CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release. "We are sending this virtual bouquet for Canadians to safely appreciate the natural beauty of our blooms and as a hopeful promise that spring is on its way."
