Beware: Heavy snow targets Montreal area for Monday's evening commute

Prepare for an intense band of snow to sprawl across portions of southern Quebec Monday, in time for the evening commute

As a system nudges into southern Quebec on Monday, the poorly timed intensity of the snowfall increases just as the evening rush hour starts in Montreal.

Some areas could see up to 15 cm of snow from this quick-hitting event, which could lead to very low visibility and snow-covered roads. Stay up-to-date with the latest weather alerts in your area, and be sure to check highway conditions before heading out on Monday.

Brace for slower Monday commute home

A low-pressure system approaching Quebec from the west will serve as the catalyst for the heavy snow expected to blanket the area during the day Monday.

Snow will quickly build into portions of southern Quebec around 2-3 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Heavy snows are expected to arrive during the evening commute, with snowfall rates approaching 3 cm per hour between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. While we're not looking at strong wind gusts or the risk of blowing snow, with snow accumulating quite quickly, we could see reduced visibility at times.

This should remain an all-snow event for most of the region, with the greatest threat for freezing rain falling south of the St. Lawrence River.

We’ll see a sharp cutoff in accumulations as you move north. The southern edge of the Island of Montreal will likely see more 5-10 cm of snow, with the risk for up to 15 cm in parts of the Eastern Townships.
