Freezing rain threat in Quebec: 20-30 mm possible, lasting up to 24 hours

Power outages, tree damage possible as strong ice storm impacts southern Quebec

An incoming ice storm is set to hit southern Quebec mid-week, with prolonged freezing rain potentially causing damage and multi-day power outages.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an orange warning for freezing rain, urging residents to avoid any non-essential travel.

"There will likely be transportation delays and cancellations," says ECCC in the warning. "Prolonged utility outages are likely. Significant damage to property, including some buildings and trees, is likely due to the weight of ice."

A prolonged weather event arriving Tuesday night could bring a significant ice storm to parts of Quebec.

A moisture-laden system from the southern U.S. will intensify early Wednesday across southern Quebec.

Freezing rain and ice pellets are expected much of Wednesday for areas including Montreal, Gatineau, and the Eastern Townships. If warmer air pushes north, freezing rain impacts could shift, introducing some uncertainty regarding ice accumulation.

As the system tracks east, heavy snowfall is forecast for central and eastern Quebec, including Gaspé and the Lower North Shore.

Between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, colder air will filter in, transitioning freezing rain and rain in southern Quebec to a mix of wintry precipitation and snow.

Expected totals include 20-40+ cm of snow for the Outaouais, Laurentians, Quebec City, and Gaspé, 20-30+ mm of rain for the Eastern Townships, and 15-30+ mm of freezing rain, with over 30 mm possible north of Montreal in North Shore communities.

Not all freezing rain will accrete due to factors like wind and precipitation rates.
