Flooding shuts down parts of Yellowhead Trail for second time in a week: police

EPS issued early morning advisory about flooded underpasses between 97th and 184th streets

Yellowhead Trail in north Edmonton has flooded for the second time in a week following an overnight storm.

Police say traffic is being diverted from the area, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes until the water drains and debris can be cleared from the expressway.

The Edmonton Police Service issued an advisory before 3 a.m. on Wednesday that underpasses on the thoroughfare were flooded between 97th and 184th streets.

A few hours later, the City of Edmonton posted an alert to motorists, noting that traffic in both directions is affected between 121st and 156th streets. Police said flooding has impacted underpasses from St. Albert Trail to 170th Street.

In a news release just before 10 a.m., the city said on-ramps for the expressway are actively being closed in order to divert traffic and give crews room to work.

The city said crews, including police and Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services, are working closely with Epcor staff at various locations to safely reopen the road as soon as possible.

The city added that there are traffic signal issues for the intersections of St. Albert Trail at 128th Avenue, 142nd Street at 91st Avenue and 97th Street at 124th Avenue.

Yellowhead Trail previously flooded on Friday, causing the thoroughfare to close from 66th Street to 121st Street.

In an email to CBC News on Wednesday morning, EPS said "there is no clear timeline as to how long it will take for the water to drain."
