Dust from US storms reaches Ontario: A 2,000+ km journey
Some southern Ontarians may have had to literally dust off their vehicles early Thursday morning!
If you were up early enough in southern Ontario, you may have noticed a little extra dust covering your vehicle on Thursday morning. No, your vehicle didn't go for a secret late-night drive down any dirt roads—the coating of dust is thanks to a major dust storm that impacted parts of New Mexico and Texas on Tuesday, which led to widespread road closures and power outages across both states.
As the raging dust storm swept through New Mexico and Texas, a newly developed Colorado low picked up much of the dust, pulling it high into the atmosphere.

A large trail of dust was left behind several states through Wednesday as the low made its way northeastward, into southern Ontario—over 2,000 km away!

Light rains across parts of the province overnight Wednesday brought the dust down to the surface with them, causing vehicles and outdoor objects to be coated in the dusty sediment.
This phenomenon can also be referred to as "dirty rain" or "rain dust."
