Crews search for missing boater in Lake Ontario near Oakville

A search continues for a missing boater on Lake Ontario in Oakville.

Halton Police Marine Officers searched through the night on Thursday for a boater that they believe went missing in Lake Ontario near Oakville.

Police were called to an area near 16 Mile Creek and Lake Ontario to assist a boater amid strong winds and thunderstorms Thursday evening, where they discovered another boat nearby with no occupants inside.

According to a police investigation, the vessel was purchased earlier in the day and the "experienced" operator was observed alone while boarding and leaving Bronte Harbor around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Search and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the area, with an extensive shoreline search covering Lake Ontario from 16 Mile Creek Area to Bronte Harbour.

Flares were used to illuminate Lake Ontario, as the search continued well into the night.

The search is expected to continue throughout the day on Friday, police said.
