Alberta drivers beware thick fog, slick roads into Saturday

Widespread fog and the potential for freezing drizzle will lead to poor visibility and slick surfaces across southern Alberta into Saturday morning

Another round of widespread fog building in southern Alberta will accompany a potential for freezing drizzle in spots beginning Friday night.

Fog will lead to poor visibility from Calgary south toward the international border overnight Friday and into Saturday morning. Patches of freezing drizzle in the far south may lead to slippery roads and sidewalks across the affected areas.

Fog expected to build across southern Alberta

A warm front moving into southern Alberta will contribute favourable conditions for widespread fog development.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a Yellow Advisory - Fog for much of southern Alberta in anticipation of worsening conditions into the nighttime hours.

“Visibility will be suddenly reduced at times. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic,” ECCC said in its alert.

Visibility is forecast to drop below 400 metres at times for some locations in southern Alberta, focusing on communities in the southern foothills. Forecasters expect the fog to clear out by Saturday afternoon.

Conditions across the far south, between Lethbridge and Milk River, will also be favourable for patches of freezing drizzle. This light precipitation could leave a slick glaze on exposed surfaces such as roads, sidewalks, and steps.

Drivers and pedestrians alike should use extreme caution while heading out in these areas overnight Friday and into early Saturday morning. Surfaces that appear wet may in fact be icy instead.
