Snow and ice hinder holiday weekend travel in Atlantic Canada

Snow and freezing rain will continue into Sunday for parts of Atlantic Canada as the tail of a one-two punch of winter storms departs

Expect slick travel conditions across Atlantic Canada as the last act of a wintry pattern finally starts to pull away from the East Coast.

An icy Friday led into a snowy Saturday across much of the Maritimes. Snow will taper off late Saturday in the Maritimes as the system heads to Newfoundland, where overnight freezing rain will lead into a burst of snow to end the storm Sunday.

The beginning of 2024 looks much calmer than the weather we saw this weekend, but forecasters will monitor the potential for more active weather by the end of next week.

Snow that continued across the Maritimes for much of Saturday will taper off through Saturday night as the system moves away from the region. Storm total snow accumulations of 5-10 cm are likely across much of Nova Scotia, eastern New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, with pockets of 10+ cm possible.

The system will move into Newfoundland with a bit of warm air aloft, which will slide over the cold air locked at the surface on the Avalon Peninsula to lead to a period of freezing rain overnight Saturday into early Sunday.

Newfoundland Freezing Rain Accretion

Avoid travel if possible on Saturday night during and immediately after freezing rain. Expect slick roads, sidewalks, and steps across the Avalon as a result of freezing rain.

Freezing rain will transition to snowfall across the Avalon by Sunday morning, leaving behind a modest blanket of up to 5 cm across St. John’s. The blanket of snow with ice beneath could lead to additional travel issues Sunday.

Atlantic snow through Sunday

The storm will pull away from the region through Sunday, leaving behind fairer conditions just in time for your evening New Year’s Eve plans.

Behind this weekend system, conditions should settle down across Atlantic Canada and give way to fair weather with cooler temperatures through the middle of the week. Forecasters are watching the potential for an unsettled pattern to return closer to next weekend.
