
Alberta's roller-coaster ride of temperatures swings back into mild territory
Temperatures in Alberta in recent months have been quite the back-and-forth ride. There have been four bouts of cold air since the end of November. Luckily, the cold snaps have been shorter than the warm-ups
After a short burst of snowfall in parts of Alberta this week, eyes are now focused back on the temperature pattern in the Western Canadian province.
The temperature roller-coaster continues this week, but instead of transitioning to a cold-dominant pattern, very mild Pacific air will dominate through the end of January.

Temperatures in Alberta in recent months have been quite the back-and-forth ride. There have been four bouts of cold air: The end of November, middle of December, beginning of January, and this past weekend.

Luckily, those cold snaps have been shorter than the warm-ups.
This week:
Temperatures have rebounded from the cold over this past weekend, and are forecast to stay mild for the next week.
Daytime high temperatures in Calgary, Alta., will hover from around -3 C, which is normal, to 3 C. That will lead to a temperature anomaly to just above normal.

The overnight temperature normal is -15 C, but all overnight lows from Wednesday and onwards are forecast to avoid reaching negative, double-digit temperatures.
The temperature in Edmonton, Alta., will be similar to Calgary, but the difference is that the normal value is slightly colder, which means the temperature anomaly is going to be greater.

The anomaly is Alberta will see the greatest in northern sections where the temperatures can be upwards of 10 C above normal over the next seven days.

A cold front swinging through on Thursday will knock temperatures down somewhat, but most places will stay above seasonal. Similar to the pattern earlier this winter, there is an indication that another cooldown is coming for early February.
