Air mass clash fuels a thunderstorm risk in parts of southern Ontario

A battle of two air masses in southern Ontario could spark up thunderstorms across parts of the Golden Horseshoe on Monday afternoon and evening, with a focus on the Niagara region

While Thunder Bay deals with more snow this spring, extreme southwestern Ontario will be enjoying patio weather to start the week as temperatures spill into the low 20s from the warm front attempting to lift north.

However, the warmth and a strong temperature gradient will fuel a thunderstorm risk across parts of the Golden Horseshoe--stretching from Hamilton to Lake Erie shores and the Niagara region. The latter could also see some stronger storms pop up.

But not everyone will be enjoying the warmth. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will be staying on the cooler side as an easterly wind off Lake Ontario prevents the warmth from reaching the region.

Through Monday afternoon, the greatest risk of thunderstorm activity extends from Hamilton down to Lake Erie and the Niagara region-–associated with a more unstable, warm sector.

Although some rumbles of thunderstorm might be heard in the western parts of the GTA, the best chance for storms, and potentially stronger cells, would be in Niagara. That is the place to watch.
