A blizzard warning in May? See which part of Canada is getting hit

We may be inching even closer to the start of meteorological summer on June 1, but winter weather is still in full swing across parts of Northern Canada.

It's May 24, and a blizzard warning is in effect for Resolute, Nvt.

"A low-pressure system literally at the 'top of the world' is generating strong wind gusts, blowing snow and near zero visibility," says Nadine Powell, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "As this low crosses the area, expect snowfall and winds to intensify into Thursday."

Wind gusts could be as strong as 80-90 km/h with this system, with dangerous blizzard conditions likely to last for at least six hours.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Conditions will then gradually improve Thursday night as the winds ease.

On average, Resolute typically sees about 10 cm of snow throughout the month of May.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least six hours.
