Alberta to part ways with warmth with near 15-degree temperature freefall

Saturday will give Alberta one more day of pleasant temperatures, and another chance for Calgary to hit the 20-degree mark for the first time this year, before daytime highs take a considerable nosedive on Sunday after a cold front pushes through

The last weekend in April will start off nicely in Alberta, but it won't have a pleasant ending to it.

Edmonton joined 2025's 20-degree day club on Friday, with Calgary potentially becoming a member on Saturday as the warmth continues for a final day before a stark drop in temperatures come Sunday.

A near-15 degree drop between Saturday and Sunday temperatures is expected once a cold front swings through, also ushering in rainfall and high-elevation snow along the Trans-Canada Highway.

Thankfully, the weather should rebound in time for voters to head to the polls in Monday’s election.

A classic spring Saturday stumbles by Sunday

Much like we saw throughout the province on Friday, with warmth resulting in Edmonton reaching its first 20-degree day in 195 days (21.7°C), Saturday will see the similarly mild temperatures across Alberta.

High pressure over the region will allow for abundant sunshine that’ll help to push temperatures to the 20-degree mark through Saturday afternoon.

A sharp pattern change will sweep over the western Prairies to close out the weekend, thanks to a cold front dropping south, bringing folks across Alberta close to a 15-degree temperature drop for Sunday.

Saturday’s high of 20°C in Red Deer will slip to just 7°C by Sunday, with conditions only a few degrees warmer up in Edmonton and down in Calgary. Only communities in the south and east—including Lethbridge and Medicine Hat—will be able to hold on to their warmth an extra day.

Sunday will also yield some unsettled weather in Alberta, with rain for Edmonton in the morning, then travelling down the QE2 through the day.

Snow is possible throughout the day in the foothills and in the alpine regions, but Calgary and Red Deer should stay all rain. Snowy conditions could affect travel along portions of the Trans-Canada Highway at higher elevations.
