Safety tips to avoid a lightning strike during a thunderstorm
With severe weather season underway in Canada, officials are reminding residents to take precautions when thunderstorms strike.
You often hear the phrase, 'when thunder roars, go indoors' when outside prior to a thunderstorm passing through. That is a safe way to ensure you don't get struck by lightning. If you can't get indoors right away, then avoid high ground, water, tall, isolated trees and metal objects such as fences or bleachers.
Even indoors, you have to take safety precautions in order to prevent receiving a electric shock from a lightning bolt.
Stay away from windows.
Unplug appliances.
Do not use the telephone.
Avoid running tap water.
