How to accurately measure snow: A demonstration
Measuring Snow? There's a chance you're doing it wrong. The Weather Network's Nathan Coleman shows how to get the most accurate measurement after a snowfall.
When measuring snowfall, it's easy to get a rough estimate, but for accuracy, you should take your measurement on a flat, level surface to avoid measuring the grass beneath the snow.
One effective method is to use a snowboard. Any flat board will work, but a white surface is ideal, as it absorbs less sunlight and stays closer to the ambient air temperature.
Where should you place the board? Choose a location away from trees and other obstructions, where snow drifting from high winds is minimized.
After your initial measurement, clear the board and measure again to avoid the issue of a disappearing ruler.
