What B.C. is learning about earthquakes from the 2023 disaster in Turkey

What makes buildings able to withstand powerful earthquakes, and how can we implement this in Canada's own earthquake-prone regions? The Weather Network's Mia Gordon investigates.

Half a year after the devastating earthquake in Turkey that killed tens of thousands of people, left many more injured, and destroyed entire cities, a team of researchers from the University of British Columbia are trying to answer the question why? Why did some cities and buildings completely collapse while others were able to withstand the impacts? They are hoping that their findings will improve structures in Vancouver in the event of the "Big One."
