Why you should embrace the great outdoors as your New Year's resolution

Actionable tips and strategies to tackle your New Year resolutions head-on while basking in the beauty of the great outdoors

The most common New Year's resolutions are to: lose weight, save money, and improve mental health.

Conveniently enough, spending time outside can improve all three of these resolutions simultaneously.

During the winter season, the cold and snowy conditions may drain motivation from you. Studies have proven that spending time in nature and exercise can reduce depression and anxiety, as well as improve your mood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "being physically active can improve your brain health and manage weight."

You can burn just as many calories as in the gym by heading outside. Setting goals like a walk-a-day is a simple and effective way to implement a daily fitness routine. Up the intensity to a jog a day and really see the results you're looking for speed up.

Not only will you avoid expensive gym membership costs, but you can avoid entertainment prices, too. Instead of a dinner date or a movie, go for a hike, skate on an outdoor skating rink or head to the beach. A night roasting marshmallows over a campfire is a whole lot cheaper than a night at a bar.

Enjoying time outside can be even more enjoyable with friends and family. The power of human connection is important for our mental health, too - so spread the wellness. Not only will inviting a friend hold you accountable to show up and complete your resolutions, you will also encourage others into healthier lifestyle habits.

According to a study published by the International Journal of Obesity, the more vigorously a person exercises, the healthier their eating habits become. This in full circle will promote weight loss and reduce stress.

So this year, make spending time outside number one on your New Year's resolution list - and see a lifestyle improvement that is manageable and enjoyable.
