PHOTOS: Wintry wallop hits Ontario on Boxing Day

Southern Ontario experienced slick roads and scattered power outages Friday as blowing snow, ice pellets and freezing rain moved through the region.

A messy wintry mix hit Ontario in time for Boxing Day on Friday, causing power outages and tough travel throughout southern parts of the province.

While precipitation remained all snow throughout most of northern and eastern Ontario, a layer of warm air aloft turned the precipitation into a dangerous mix of ice pellets and freezing rain across southwestern Ontario. Precipitation types shifted with tiny changes in air temperature, resulting in many communities experiencing a mix throughout the storm.

Thick ice accretions coated branches, vehicles, and power lines in the southwest, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses during the day Friday. A blanket of snow fell closer to the Greater Toronto Area, with totals cut down by ice pellets mixing in.

This storm continued south of the border, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights into and out of the U.S. as New York City saw its largest snowfall in several years.
