How one man steps in when migrating predators come too close for comfort
No matter how many polar bears have come through, both man and beast have remained unharmed.
Jeffrey Keefe is a ranger and trained bear guard in the small coastal town of Black Tickle in Labrador. His responsibility is to protect his community from the polar bears that migrate north to find sea ice as the weather warms every spring.
Keefe, who also runs the local power plant, makes sure the bears can safely pass while keeping his community of just over 80 residents safe.
Despite the potential danger, Keefe loves polar bears and has a deep respect for them. He notes that the snowpack is quickly melting this year, about a month early, and that has likely created the surge in bear numbers as they race north.
