Moose rescued after flipping over highway median in Newfoundland

A man, now dubbed the 'Moose Flipper', rescued a moose after it got stuck on a highway median in Newfoundland

A moose attempting to jump a median along the Trans-Canada Highway in Steady Brook, Newfoundland, found itself in a precarious position when it flipped and landed on its back near a concrete barrier. Fortunately, local dairy farmer Melvin Rideout was passing through and had the unique expertise needed to step in.

"I could tell the animal was in trouble," Rideout said. "It was on its back, leaning against the barrier and unable to get up. I pulled into the lane to make sure no other vehicles would strike the moose."

Drawing on his experience handling large animals, Rideout and another driver managed to roll the moose upright. Once back on its feet, the animal appeared unsteady, but made its way down to a nearby ditch.

"A few people mentioned seeing a moose around later that day, and I believe it’s the same one," he said. "It didn’t seem to have life-threatening injuries."
