Fish ladders could be used to help the fish

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has reported that migrating salmon are blocked in the Fraser River after a rock slide northwest of Kamloops occurred in late June.

In an interview with CBC, DFO spokeswoman Bonnie Antcliffe says that they are considering options to save the blocked fish, including using a truck to move them.

Fish ladders are another option that could be used to help climb over the fallen rocks, and these are built with a series of low steps that fish can leap up on.

The DFO is concerned that the salmon will not be able to reach their spawning grounds, and it is currently impossible to confirm what percentage are getting through.

Antcliffe says that staff and engineers are monitoring the area by helicopter because it is unsafe for crews to do fieldwork in the remote area due to falling rocks and fast-moving waters.
