The phenomenon is an annual event.

Clouds of dying mayflies swarmed streets in southern China earlier this month, creating a thick layer over the roadway that, at first glance, looked like snow.

Video captured in the city of Yiyang in Hunana Province on September 4 shows the mayfies dropping onto the streets, creating a slippery situation that left at least one truck stranded.

A spokesperson for the local agricultural and rural administration told Reuters the phenomenon is an annual event. Mayflies live on water and only emerge to mate.

Adults have a short lifespan, sometimes only lasting a few hours, with they insects dying after they procreate.

Mayflies pose no risk to humans or crops because in the adult phase, the insects do not eat.
